Recently, my wife’s mom decided to raze her childhood homeplace in Tishomingo County, Mississippi to build a new home. The family gathered to help salvage a few “memories” from the old home before it was demolished and the remains gone forever. Jean, Debbie’s mother, decided to save the old Tishomingo County sandstones that surrounded the exterior of the old home. She plans to incorporate the stone into her new home- something old, something new. In addition to the unique stone, Debbie and I made a special trip to salvage a few wooden items from the home. We were able to rescue a good bit of boards that were on the ceiling of the front porch as well as a door, several windows, a porch light, and some cool wooden and porcelain door knobs. These items I have begun to incorporate into a few new art pieces. Two of my favorites are an assemblage piece called “Homeplace” that has incorporated the tongue and groove boards and the front porch light. The second piece is a lamp made from drift wood, deer antlers, and some of the boards, and one of the door knobs.
